He was the son of the sage Jaratkaru and the serpent goddess Manasa (or Jaratkaru, his mother, also named Jaratkaru). His birth was prophesied to save the serpents (Nagas) from the Sarpa Satra (snake sacrifice) performed by King Janamejaya.
Āstīka successfully intervened in the sacrifice, convincing Janamejaya to stop the ritual, thereby saving countless Nagas. This act cemented his place as a revered figure, embodying wisdom, diplomacy, and compassion. The story of Āstīka is a central narrative in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata.
