History & Etymology
Zeng (曾) is a common Chinese surname with a long and distinguished history. Its origins can be traced back to the Xia Dynasty (c. 2070–1600 BC) through the ancient state of Zeng, located in what is now Shandong province. The state was founded by a descendant of Yu the Great, the legendary founder of the Xia Dynasty. After the state of Zeng was conquered, its people adopted the name of their former state as their surname.
The Zeng surname is particularly notable for its association with Zengzi (曾子), one of the most prominent disciples of Confucius during the Spring and Autumn period (771–476 BC). Zengzi was known for his filial piety and his contributions to Confucian thought, particularly the Great Learning. His descendants have played a significant role in Chinese history and culture, contributing to the surname's prestige and widespread recognition.
