Yesus

Yesus is the Greek form of the Aramaic name Yeshua, which is a contracted form of the Hebrew name Yehoshua (Joshua). The name Yehoshua means 'Yahweh is salvation' or 'God is salvation'. It was a common name in Judea during the Second Temple period. The Septuagint, the Koine Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, rendered Yehoshua as Iesous, which then passed into Latin as Iesus.

The name gained immense significance through its association with Jesus of Nazareth, the central figure of Christianity. In many languages, the form of the name used for Jesus is derived directly from the Greek 'Iesous'. While historically a common name, its religious connotations led to it becoming almost exclusively associated with Jesus Christ in Christian cultures, making it rare for individuals to be named 'Jesus' in many Western societies, though it is common in Hispanic cultures.
