Wisnu

Wisnu is the Indonesian and Javanese form of the Sanskrit name Vishnu. In Hinduism, Vishnu is one of the most important deities, forming part of the Trimurti (the Hindu trinity) along with Brahma the creator and Shiva the destroyer. Vishnu is known as the Preserver or Protector of the universe, and his role is to maintain cosmic order and righteousness. The name itself derives from the Sanskrit root 'vish', meaning 'to pervade' or 'to enter into', signifying his omnipresence.

The name Wisnu gained prominence in Indonesia, particularly in Java, due to the historical influence of Hinduism and later Buddhism on the archipelago. While Indonesia is now predominantly Muslim, Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, featuring characters associated with Vishnu, remain deeply ingrained in Indonesian culture, art, and traditional performances like wayang kulit (shadow puppet theatre).
