Willibrordus

Willibrordus is a Latinized form of the Old High German name Willibrord. The name is composed of the elements *willo* meaning 'will, desire' and *berht* meaning 'bright, famous' or *brord* meaning 'point, spear'. The interpretation 'resolute protector' comes from combining 'will' with the sense of a 'spear' or 'point' used for defense. It was notably borne by Saint Willibrord, an Anglo-Saxon missionary who became the first Bishop of Utrecht and is known as the 'Apostle to the Frisians'.

Saint Willibrord's influence in the early medieval period led to the name's spread, particularly in the Low Countries and parts of Germany.
