Wenzeslaus is a Latinized form of the Old Slavic name *Vęceslavъ, meaning 'greater glory' or 'more glory'. The elements are *vęce 'more, greater' and *slavъ 'glory'. The name gained significant prominence through Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia, who was martyred in the 10th century and became the patron saint of Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic). His story was later popularized in the English Christmas carol 'Good King Wenceslas'.
