Wedi

Wedi is a common prefix in the Tigrinya language, primarily used to denote 'son of'. It is not typically a standalone given name but rather forms part of a patronymic structure, similar to 'ben' in Hebrew or 'ibn' in Arabic. For example, 'Wedi Afwerki' means 'son of Afwerki'. This linguistic convention is deeply embedded in the naming traditions of Eritrea and parts of Ethiopia where Tigrinya is spoken.

The use of 'Wedi' as a prefix highlights the importance of lineage and paternal heritage in Tigrinya culture. While it functions grammatically as a marker of filiation, its frequent appearance in names and titles gives it a cultural significance beyond a simple grammatical particle. It can also be used informally to address a young man or boy, similar to 'lad' or 'boy' in English, but its primary formal function remains as a patronymic indicator.
