Walesi

Walesi is the Fijian adaptation of the European name Alice. The name Alice itself has a long history, deriving from the Old French name Aalis, a short form of Adelaïs, which ultimately comes from the Germanic name Adalheidis. Adalheidis is composed of the Germanic elements *adal- meaning 'noble' and *heid- meaning 'kind, type, sort'. The name Alice gained significant popularity in England and other European countries, and through colonial influence and cultural exchange, it was introduced to Fiji. The Fijian language adapted the pronunciation and spelling to 'Walesi' to fit its phonological rules.
