Walburge

The name Walburge is of Old High German origin, derived from the elements *walh* meaning 'foreigner' or 'Celt' (though often interpreted as 'battlefield' or 'slaughter') and *burg* meaning 'fortress' or 'protection'. It gained prominence through Saint Walpurga (also Walburga), an 8th-century Anglo-Saxon missionary to Germany. Her feast day, Walpurgisnacht (Walpurgis Night), is celebrated on April 30th and has strong folkloric associations, particularly in Germanic cultures.

While the name's etymological roots point to strength and protection, its historical association with Saint Walpurga cemented its use in Christian Europe. The saint was known for her healing abilities and protection against witchcraft, which contributed to the name's enduring, albeit niche, popularity in certain regions.
