Virginius

Virginius is an ancient Roman gens (clan) name, most famously associated with the legendary figure Lucius Verginius. According to Livy's account, Lucius Verginius was a centurion whose daughter, Verginia, was abducted by the decemvir Appius Claudius Crassus in 450 BC. To save her from slavery and dishonor, Lucius Verginius tragically killed his own daughter in the Forum. This act sparked a popular uprising that led to the overthrow of the decemvirs and the restoration of the Roman Republic.

The name's root, 'virgo,' means 'maiden' or 'virgin,' reflecting an association with purity and innocence. While the story of Lucius Verginius is a tragic one, the name itself carries connotations of honor, integrity, and a fierce protective nature, stemming from the father's desperate act to preserve his daughter's dignity.
