Vilikesa

Vilikesa is the Fijian adaptation of the Latin name Felix. The name Felix itself has a long history, originating in ancient Rome where it was used as a cognomen (a third name) meaning 'lucky' or 'successful'. It gained popularity among early Christians due to its positive meaning and the veneration of several saints named Felix. The name was introduced to Fiji through Western influence, likely during the colonial period, and adapted to the phonological rules of the Fijian language.

The transformation from Felix to Vilikesa involves several common sound changes seen when European names are adopted into Fijian. The 'f' sound often becomes 'v', and the 'x' sound (which doesn't exist in Fijian) is typically replaced by 'kesa' or similar combinations to approximate the original sound and fit the open-syllable structure of Fijian.
