Viking

The name 'Viking' derives from the Old Norse word 'víkingr'. The exact etymology of 'víkingr' is debated among scholars, but it is generally thought to relate to 'vík' (bay, inlet) or 'víka' (to travel, to wander). It originally referred to an expedition overseas, particularly a piratical raid, and later to the person undertaking such an expedition. It was not a self-designation for the people of Scandinavia during the Viking Age, but rather a term for those who went on these voyages.

While the term 'Viking' has been used for centuries to describe the Norse seafarers, its adoption as a personal given name is a much more recent phenomenon.
