Varvara

Varvara is the Russian form of the Greek name Barbara. The name Barbara itself derives from the ancient Greek word 'barbaros' (βάρβαρος), which originally meant 'foreign, strange, non-Greek-speaking'. It was an onomatopoeic word, imitating the unintelligible sounds of foreign speech ('bar-bar'). The name became popular due to Saint Barbara, a legendary early Christian martyr, whose cult spread widely in both Western and Eastern Christianity. In Eastern Orthodox countries, particularly Russia, the name Varvara has been consistently popular for centuries.

Saint Barbara's story, though likely apocryphal, tells of a beautiful young woman imprisoned by her pagan father to protect her from suitors. She secretly converted to Christianity and was eventually martyred. Her feast day is celebrated on December 4th in both Eastern and Western traditions, though she was removed from the Roman Catholic calendar of saints in 1969 due to the legendary nature of her hagiography. Despite this, her veneration continues, especially in the Orthodox Church, where Varvara remains a beloved name.
