Valpurge

Valpurge is a less common variant of Walburga, a name with Old High German roots. The elements are 'wald' meaning 'power, rule' and 'burg' meaning 'fortress, protection'. The name gained prominence through Saint Walpurga, an 8th-century Anglo-Saxon missionary to Germany. Her feast day, April 30th (or May 1st), became known as Walpurgisnacht (Walpurgis Night) in Germanic folklore, associated with witches' gatherings, though originally a Christian celebration.

While Walburga was historically more prevalent, Valpurge is a more direct phonetic rendering in some languages or a simplified form. Its association with Walpurgisnacht has given it a slightly mystical or even dark connotation in some contexts, contrasting with its saintly origin. It remains a rare name today, often chosen for its unique sound and historical depth.
