Ulissus

The name Ulissus is an uncommon variant of Ulysses, which is the Latinized form of the Greek name Odysseus. Odysseus is a legendary Greek king of Ithaca and the hero of Homer's epic poem, the Odyssey. The etymology of Odysseus is debated, but it is often associated with the Greek verb 'odyssomai' (ὀδύσσομαι), meaning 'to be angry,' 'to hate,' or 'to cause pain,' possibly referring to the pain he inflicted or endured. Another theory links it to 'odyssein' (ὀδύσσειν), meaning 'to lament' or 'to wail.'

While Odysseus is the original Greek form, the Roman poet Virgil used 'Ulysses' in his epic poem, the Aeneid, which became the more common form in Western literature. 'Ulissus' appears to be a less common, perhaps phonetic, spelling or a regional variant that has not gained widespread recognition. Its rarity suggests it might be a modern adaptation or a very localized historical usage rather than a distinct ancient form.
