Ulaiasi

Ulaiasi is the Fijian adaptation of the Hebrew name Uriah. The name Uriah itself is biblical, borne by a Hittite soldier in King David's army, known for his loyalty and tragic death. The process of adapting foreign names into Fijian often involves phonetic changes to fit the Fijian phonology, which typically uses open syllables and a limited set of consonants. Thus, 'Uriah' transforms into 'Ulaiasi' to better suit the local linguistic patterns.

The adoption of biblical names like Uriah (and its Fijian form Ulaiasi) is common in Fiji due to the significant influence of Christianity brought by missionaries in the 19th century.
