Thanos

Thanos is a modern Greek diminutive of Athanasios, which means 'immortal' from the Greek 'athanatos' (ἀθάνατος), composed of 'a-' (ἀ-) meaning 'not' and 'thanatos' (θάνατος) meaning 'death'. The name Athanasios has a long and venerable history, particularly within Eastern Orthodox Christianity, due to Saint Athanasius of Alexandria, a prominent theologian and Church Father of the 4th century. The short form Thanos gained more widespread recognition in the 20th century.

While Athanasios has been a consistently used name in Greece and other Orthodox countries for centuries, Thanos as a standalone name or nickname has seen a surge in global recognition, largely due to its association with the Marvel Comics character. This character, created in 1973, brought the name into popular culture outside of its traditional Greek context, giving it a new, albeit fictional, mythological weight.
