Tausug

The name Tausug refers to an ethnolinguistic group indigenous to the Sulu Archipelago in the Philippines, as well as parts of Malaysia (Sabah) and Indonesia (North Kalimantan). Their name is derived from the words 'tau' (people) and 'sug' (current), referring to their historical connection to the strong currents of the Sulu Sea. They are known for their rich maritime culture, skilled craftsmanship, and a history of independent sultanates.

Historically, the Tausug people established the Sultanate of Sulu, which was a powerful thalassocracy that once encompassed parts of the southern Philippines, northern Borneo, and other islands. Their language, also called Tausug, is an Austronesian language closely related to the Visayan languages. While primarily an ethnic identifier, the term 'Tausug' can occasionally be adopted as a personal name, particularly to honor heritage and identity.
