Tanith

Tanith was the chief goddess of Carthage, the ancient Phoenician city-state. She was a celestial goddess of war, a mother goddess, and a nursemaid, often associated with the moon and fertility. Her cult was widespread throughout the Western Mediterranean, particularly in North Africa, Malta, and Sardinia, where Phoenician and Punic influences were strong. She was sometimes considered the consort of Baal Hammon.

The name's exact etymology is debated, but it is generally believed to be of Phoenician origin. The 'Tn' root is often linked to 'serpent' or 'dragon,' and 't' is a common feminine ending. Her worship involved various rituals, including child sacrifice, though this practice is highly contested by modern historians. After the fall of Carthage, her cult persisted for a time under Roman rule, often syncretized with Roman goddesses like Juno Caelestis.
