Tanit

Tanit was the chief goddess of Carthage, the ancient Phoenician city-state. She was the consort of Baal Hammon and was worshipped as a celestial goddess of war, a mother goddess, and a nurse. Her cult was widespread in the Western Mediterranean, particularly in North Africa, and continued to be prominent even after the Roman conquest of Carthage.

Her symbol, a trapezoidal figure topped by a horizontal line and a circle, was found on many ancient stelae and artifacts. She was often associated with the moon, and her worship involved rituals and sacrifices. The name itself is believed to be related to a Semitic root meaning 'serpent' or 'dragon', reflecting her chthonic and powerful aspects.
