Tahvo

Tahvo is a Finnish variant of the Greek name Stephanos (Στέφανος), which means 'crown' or 'garland'. The name Stephen, from which Tahvo ultimately derives, has a long and rich history, primarily due to Saint Stephen, considered the first Christian martyr. His story is recounted in the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament, where he was stoned to death for his faith. This association made the name popular throughout the Christian world.

In Finland, names often undergo significant phonetic changes to fit the Finnish language's phonology. Stephanos evolved into Staffan in Swedish, and then further into Tahvo in Finnish. This transformation reflects the linguistic characteristics of Finnish, which tends to simplify consonant clusters and adapt foreign sounds to its own system. Despite its ancient Greek roots, Tahvo is distinctly Finnish in its form and usage.
