History & Etymology
Scylla (Szkilla is a variant) is a prominent figure in Greek mythology, a monstrous sea goddess who dwelt on one side of a narrow strait, opposite the whirlpool Charybdis. Sailors who attempted to navigate the strait had to choose between Scylla and Charybdis, leading to the idiom "between Scylla and Charybdis." Originally, Scylla was a beautiful nymph, but was transformed into a monster by either Circe or Amphitrite out of jealousy. Her transformation involved her lower body becoming a mass of six dog heads and twelve tentacles.
The name's etymology is rooted in the Greek verb 'skyllō' (σκύλλω), meaning 'to tear' or 'to rend,' which aptly describes her monstrous nature and destructive actions towards passing ships. While not a common given name in modern times, its mythological significance has kept it alive in literature and cultural references. The variant 'Szkilla' is a less common spelling, likely a phonetic adaptation or a regional variant.
