Syfax

Syfax (often spelled Syphax) was a king of the Masaesyli, a Berber tribe of western Numidia in ancient North Africa. He was a significant figure during the Second Punic War (218–201 BC), initially allied with the Romans against Carthage, but later switched his allegiance to Carthage, marrying Sophonisba, the daughter of the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal Gisco. His shifting loyalties and military campaigns played a crucial role in the North African theater of the war.

His name is primarily known through historical accounts from Roman historians like Livy and Polybius. The name itself is of indigenous Numidian (Berber) origin, reflecting the pre-Roman linguistic landscape of North Africa. While not widely used as a given name today, it holds historical significance as a royal name from ancient North Africa.
