Swastika

The name Swastika derives from the Sanskrit word 'svastika' (स्वस्तिक). In Sanskrit, 'svasti' means 'well-being' or 'good fortune,' and the suffix '-ka' is a diminutive. Thus, it literally means 'that which is associated with well-being' or 'lucky charm.' The symbol itself, a cross with arms of equal length, each bent at a right angle, has been used for millennia across various cultures globally, particularly in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, representing prosperity, good luck, and divinity.

Historically, the symbol and its associated name have been revered in South Asia for thousands of years, appearing in ancient art, architecture, and religious texts. It is a sacred symbol in many Eastern religions, often found at the entrance of temples or homes, on religious artifacts, and in traditional art. The name Swastika, while less common as a personal name than the symbol's widespread use, carries these deeply positive connotations within its cultural context. Unfortunately, its adoption and perversion by the Nazi party in the 20th century have led to its widespread misinterpretation and negative association in the Western world, overshadowing its ancient and positive origins.
