Sofroniusz is the Polish form of the ancient Greek name Sophronios (Σωφρόνιος), derived from the word 'sophron' (σώφρων). 'Sophron' is a compound of 'sos' (σῶς) meaning 'safe, sound' and 'phren' (φρήν) meaning 'mind, intellect'. The name therefore conveys the meaning of having a sound mind, being sensible, prudent, and self-controlled. It was a virtue name in ancient Greece, reflecting highly valued qualities.

The name gained prominence through several early Christian saints, most notably Saint Sophronius of Jerusalem, a 7th-century patriarch and theologian. His veneration helped to spread the name throughout the Byzantine Empire and into Slavic cultures, where it was adapted into forms like Sofroniusz in Polish, Sofron in Russian, and Sofronije in Serbian.
