Rumi

The name Rumi has multiple layers of meaning and origin. Most famously, it is associated with the 13th-century Persian poet, scholar, and theologian Jalāl ad-Dīn Mohammad Balkhī, who was known as Rumi because he lived most of his life in Konya, then part of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum (Anatolia), which was formerly part of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire. Thus, 'Rumi' literally means 'from Rum' or 'Roman'.

Beyond its geographical and historical connection to the poet, 'Rumi' also has other interpretations in Persian. It can be derived from the word 'rumi' (رومی) meaning 'Roman' or 'of Rome', but also from 'rum' (روم) which can refer to beauty or flow. In some contexts, it is also linked to the gemstone lapis lazuli, known for its deep blue color. Its modern usage as a given name, particularly for females, has seen a rise in popularity, often inspired by the poet's legacy and the name's pleasant sound.
