Rotita

The name Rotita is a Gilbertese adaptation of the Spanish word 'rosita', which is a diminutive of 'rosa' meaning 'rose'. The Spanish influence in the Gilbert Islands (now Kiribati) came through missionaries and traders, leading to the adoption and adaptation of Spanish names into the local language. The Gilbertese language often adapts foreign sounds and structures to fit its phonetic system, hence 'rosita' became 'Rotita'.

This linguistic transformation is common in cultures that adopt names from foreign languages, where sounds not present in the native phonology are replaced with the closest available equivalents.
