Polona is a Slovenian female given name with roots in ancient Greek mythology. It is derived from Apollonia, which means 'sacred to Apollo' or 'from Apollo'. Apollo was one of the most important and complex Olympian deities in classical Greek and Roman religion and mythology, known as the god of archery, music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and diseases, the sun and light, poetry, and more.

The name Apollonia spread throughout the Roman Empire and was borne by several early Christian saints, most notably Saint Apollonia of Alexandria, a virgin martyr who suffered during the persecution of Decius in the 3rd century.
