Piran

Piran is a traditional Cornish name, most famously associated with Saint Piran, the patron saint of Cornwall. According to legend, Saint Piran was an Irish abbot who was cast into the sea in the 5th or 6th century with a millstone around his neck. He miraculously floated across the Celtic Sea to Perranzabuloe in Cornwall, where he established a monastery and taught the Cornish people about Christianity and tin smelting. His feast day, March 5th, is celebrated as St. Piran's Day, a national day for Cornwall.

The name's etymology is debated, but it is often linked to the Old Cornish word 'pyran' meaning 'prayer' or 'plea.' Another theory suggests it derives from the Irish name Ciarán, meaning 'little dark one.'
