Persefoni

Persefoni is the modern Greek form of Persephone, a name deeply rooted in Greek mythology. Persephone was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, and the queen of the underworld. Her myth is one of the most famous in ancient Greece, explaining the changing seasons. She was abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld, and her mother Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, mourned her absence, causing a famine on Earth. Zeus intervened, and a compromise was reached where Persephone would spend part of the year with Hades in the underworld and part with her mother on Earth, thus symbolizing winter and spring/summer.

The name's etymology is debated. While 'to carry away light' (from 'φέρειν φῶς' - pherein phōs) is a popular interpretation, other theories suggest connections to 'destroying' or 'bringing death' (from 'πέρθειν φόνον' - perthein phonon) or even pre-Greek origins. Regardless of the precise etymology, the name is inextricably linked to the powerful and complex goddess figure.
