Payan

The name Payan is a medieval French form of the Latin name Paganus. Originally, 'Paganus' referred to a 'country dweller' or 'rustic,' derived from 'pagus' meaning 'countryside' or 'rural district.' During the early Christian era, as Christianity spread through urban centers, those who continued to practice traditional polytheistic religions in rural areas were referred to as 'pagani,' hence the association with 'pagan' or 'non-Christian.'

The name Payan was brought to England by the Normans and was relatively common in the Middle Ages, particularly as a surname. It gradually fell out of use as a given name but persisted as a surname in various forms (e.g., Payne, Paine). Its use as a given name is now quite rare.
