Parsifal

The name Parsifal is most famously associated with the hero of Arthurian legend, particularly in the works of Chrétien de Troyes and Wolfram von Eschenbach. Chrétien's 'Perceval, the Story of the Grail' (late 12th century) introduced the character, whose name is often interpreted as 'pierce the valley' or 'pierce through the middle'. Wolfram von Eschenbach's 'Parzival' (early 13th century) further developed the character and his quest for the Holy Grail, solidifying his place in medieval literature.

The etymology is debated. While Chrétien de Troyes himself offered a folk etymology of 'Perceval' as 'pierce the valley' (percer le val), modern scholars often look to Germanic roots. One prominent theory suggests a connection to Old French 'percival' (from 'perce-val'), meaning 'one who pierces the valley' or 'one who traverses the valley'. Another theory points to a possible Old Persian origin, 'Parsi-fal', meaning 'Persian fool', which might have been a derogatory term later reinterpreted.
