Ok-ja is a traditional Korean given name for females. The name is composed of two Sino-Korean elements: 'Ok' (옥), meaning 'jewel' or 'precious stone,' and 'Ja' (자), which historically meant 'child' or 'daughter.' The 'Ja' suffix was very common in female names in Korea, particularly during the early to mid-20th century, signifying a wish for the child to be precious and cherished.

While once very popular, names ending in 'Ja' have seen a significant decline in usage since the late 20th century. This is partly due to a shift in naming trends towards more modern-sounding names and partly because the 'Ja' suffix became associated with names given during the period of Japanese colonial rule, as similar suffixes were common in Japanese female names. Consequently, names like Ok-ja are now considered somewhat old-fashioned or traditional.
