Nieves

Nieves is a Spanish and Portuguese name derived from the title of the Virgin Mary, 'Nuestra Señora de las Nieves' (Our Lady of the Snows). This title refers to a legend from the 4th century (though often cited as 5th century) in Rome, where a wealthy, childless couple prayed to the Virgin Mary to indicate how they should use their fortune for charitable purposes. On a hot August night, snow miraculously fell on one of the seven hills of Rome, Esquiline Hill. Mary appeared to the couple in a dream, instructing them to build a church on the spot where the snow fell. This church became the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four major basilicas in Rome.

The name Nieves, therefore, is a Marian name, deeply rooted in Catholic tradition, particularly in Spanish-speaking countries. It is often given to girls born around August 5th, the feast day of Our Lady of the Snows.
