Nickel

Nickel is a German diminutive of Nikolaus, which itself is derived from the Greek name Nikolaos. Nikolaos is composed of the elements 'nikē' (victory) and 'laos' (people). The name became popular throughout Europe due to the veneration of Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century bishop of Myra, who is the patron saint of children, sailors, and merchants.

Over time, various diminutives and vernacular forms emerged in different languages. In German-speaking regions, 'Nickel' developed as a familiar form of Nikolaus. It also has a distinct association with the chemical element nickel, which was named after 'Kupfernickel' (copper nickel), a pejorative term used by miners for a mineral that resembled copper but yielded no copper.
