History & Etymology
Nettuno is the Italian form of Neptune, the Roman god of freshwater and the sea. His Greek counterpart is Poseidon. The name's etymology is uncertain, but it may be related to the Proto-Indo-European root *nebh- meaning 'cloud, mist, damp' or *neptu- meaning 'wet'.
In Roman mythology, Neptune was one of the three main gods, alongside Jupiter (king of the gods) and Pluto (god of the underworld). He was often depicted with a trident, riding a chariot pulled by hippocampi (sea-horses). His cult was particularly strong in coastal areas and among sailors.
