Nektarios

Nektarios is a Greek name derived from the word 'nektar' (νέκταρ), which in Greek mythology referred to the drink of the gods, believed to grant immortality. The name therefore carries connotations of divinity, immortality, and sweetness. It has been used in Greece since ancient times, though its prominence increased significantly with the veneration of Saint Nektarios of Aegina.

Saint Nektarios (born Anastasios Kephalas in 1846) was a highly respected Greek Orthodox bishop, theologian, and mystic. He founded the Holy Trinity Monastery for nuns on the island of Aegina. His life was marked by humility, spiritual wisdom, and numerous miracles, both during his lifetime and after his death. He was canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in 1961, making him one of the most recently recognized saints in the Orthodox Church. His popularity led to a resurgence of the name Nektarios in modern Greece and among Orthodox communities worldwide.
