Nathanael

Nathanael is a name with deep biblical roots, originating from the Hebrew name Netan'el (נְתַנְאֵל), meaning 'God has given' or 'gift of God.' It appears in the Old Testament as the name of several minor figures. Its prominence in Christian tradition, however, comes from the New Testament, specifically the Gospel of John, where Nathanael is one of the first disciples called by Jesus. He is famously associated with the phrase, 'Can anything good come out of Nazareth?' (John 1:46). The name was Hellenized to Nathanael (Ναθαναήλ) in Greek and then Latinized, making its way into European languages.

While always present in Christian communities, Nathanael saw a surge in use during the Protestant Reformation, particularly among Puritans in the 17th century, who favored biblical names. It has maintained a steady, though not overwhelmingly popular, presence in English-speaking countries and other Christian cultures. The variant Nathaniel is more common in modern English usage, often eclipsing Nathanael.
