The name Napoleão is the Portuguese form of the Italian name Napoleone. Its etymology is somewhat debated, but the most widely accepted theory suggests it derives from the Greek 'Neapolis' (meaning 'new city') combined with 'leon' (meaning 'lion'), thus 'lion of the new city'. Another theory links it to a Germanic tribal name, 'Nibelung', but this is less commonly accepted.
