Napoleonas

The name Napoleonas is the Lithuanian form of Napoleon. The original Italian name, Napoleone, is thought to derive from the Greek elements 'neos' (new) and 'polis' (city), combined with 'leon' (lion), thus meaning 'lion of the new city'. It gained immense prominence and historical significance through Napoleon Bonaparte, the French military and political leader who rose to power during the French Revolution and conquered much of Europe.

Before Napoleon Bonaparte, the name was relatively rare. Its association with the emperor led to a complex legacy: initially popular in France and areas under his influence, it later became less common due to the political connotations and the emperor's eventual downfall. In Lithuania, like many European countries, names are often adapted to fit the local linguistic structure, hence 'Napoleonas'.
