Misericòrdia is a Catalan name derived directly from the Latin word 'misericordia', meaning 'mercy' or 'compassion'. It is a Marian name, referring to Our Lady of Mercy (Mare de Déu de la Misericòrdia in Catalan), a title of the Virgin Mary. The devotion to Our Lady of Mercy originated in the 13th century with the Mercedarian Order, founded to ransom Christian captives from Muslim prisons.
