Mieszko

Mieszko is a name of ancient Slavic origin, most famously associated with the first historical ruler of Poland, Mieszko I. The exact etymology is debated among linguists. One prominent theory suggests it derives from the Old Slavic word *měško, meaning 'bear' or 'bear cub', which would align with a tradition of giving names related to powerful animals. Another theory links it to the Slavic root *měšati, meaning 'to mix' or 'to mingle', perhaps implying someone who is 'mixed' or 'confused', or even a 'mixer' of people/nations.

The name gained significant historical weight through Mieszko I, who united various Lechitic tribes and is considered the de facto founder of the Polish state in the 10th century. His baptism in 966 AD marked the Christianization of Poland, making the name deeply intertwined with Polish national identity and history.
