Merddyn

Merddyn is an Old Welsh name, a precursor to the more widely known Merlin. It is believed to be derived from the Welsh elements 'mor' (sea) and 'din' (hill or fort). The name's historical significance is primarily tied to the legendary figure of Merlin, the wizard and prophet in Arthurian mythology. While the exact historical existence of Merlin is debated, the name Merddyn itself reflects ancient Brythonic linguistic roots.

The transformation from Merddyn to Merlin is largely attributed to Geoffrey of Monmouth's 12th-century work, 'Historia Regum Britanniae' (History of the Kings of Britain). Geoffrey Latinized the Welsh name 'Myrddin' (a variant of Merddyn) to 'Merlinus' to avoid a perceived resemblance to the French word 'merde' (excrement). This Latinized form then became the standard in English and other European languages, cementing Merlin's place in popular culture.
