Maurits

Maurits is the Dutch form of Maurice, which itself derives from the Latin name Mauricius. The name Mauricius was used to denote someone from Mauretania, a Roman province in North Africa, or more generally, someone with dark skin. It became popular in Europe due to the veneration of Saint Maurice, a 3rd-century Roman legionary who was martyred with his entire legion for refusing to worship pagan gods.
