Mammy

The term 'mammy' originated as a colloquial or dialectal variant of 'mummy' or 'mama,' which are affectionate terms for 'mother.' These terms themselves derive from the Latin 'mamma,' meaning 'breast' or 'mother.' In the context of the Krio language, 'Mammy' was adopted and used to signify 'mother' or 'matriarch,' reflecting its English roots but integrating into the local linguistic and cultural framework.

Historically, in the American South, 'mammy' also became a controversial and often derogatory term referring to a black woman, typically an older one, who worked as a nanny or housekeeper for a white family. This association has led to the name being largely avoided in modern usage due to its painful historical connotations of servitude and racial stereotypes. However, in other cultural contexts, such as Krio, it retains its original, more innocent meaning of 'mother.'
