Mahound

The name 'Mahound' originated in medieval Europe as a corruption of the Arabic name Muhammad. During the Crusades and subsequent periods of conflict and misunderstanding between Christian Europe and the Islamic world, Muhammad was often demonized and portrayed as a pagan deity or a false prophet. 'Mahound' became a pejorative term used in medieval literature, particularly in mystery plays and romances, to refer to Muhammad, often depicting him as an idol worshipped by Muslims. It was also used to refer to any false god or devil.
