Lucifer

The name Lucifer originates from Latin, meaning 'light-bringer' (from 'lux' meaning light and 'ferre' meaning to bear or bring). In ancient Roman mythology, Lucifer was the name of the Morning Star (the planet Venus when seen before sunrise). It was also used as a title for various deities associated with light, such as Phosphorus in Greek mythology.

The association of Lucifer with the devil or Satan primarily stems from Christian theology. This connection is largely derived from a passage in Isaiah 14:12 in the Latin Vulgate Bible, which describes the fall of a Babylonian king and uses the phrase 'how you have fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!' Early Christian interpreters, notably Jerome, applied this passage metaphorically to Satan, leading to the name becoming synonymous with the devil. Despite its original benign meaning, this theological interpretation has profoundly shaped its perception and usage.
