Lothaire

Lothaire is a name with deep Germanic roots, derived from the Old High German elements *hlut* meaning 'famous' and *heri* meaning 'army' or 'warrior'. It was a name borne by several Frankish kings and Holy Roman Emperors, most notably Lothair I, who was the eldest son of Emperor Louis the Pious and became co-emperor in 817. His reign was marked by struggles with his brothers over the division of the Carolingian Empire, leading to the Treaty of Verdun in 843 which established the kingdom of Middle Francia, often referred to as Lotharingia (from which the modern region of Lorraine derives its name).
