Lorelaï

Lorelei is a name with a strong connection to German folklore. It refers to a siren-like creature said to inhabit a rock on the Rhine River, whose beautiful singing lured sailors to their doom. The legend was popularized by Clemens Brentano's ballad 'Zu Bacharach am Rheine' (1800-1802) and later by Heinrich Heine's poem 'Die Lorelei' (1824), which cemented the image of the enchanting, dangerous maiden. The name itself is thought to derive from the Old High German words 'lureln' (to murmur) and 'ley' (rock), referring to the sound of the waterfall near the rock.

While the legend is ancient, the name Lorelei as a given name became more widely used in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in German-speaking regions. Its romantic and somewhat melancholic association with the Rhine legend has given it a distinctive character. The spelling 'Lorelaï' with the diaeresis is a less common variant, often used to emphasize the pronunciation of the 'i' as a separate syllable, or simply as a stylistic choice.
