Leonoor is a Dutch and Flemish variant of Eleanor, which ultimately derives from the Old Provençal name Alienor. The exact etymology of Alienor is debated, but it is widely believed to be a Germanic name, possibly meaning 'other Aenor' or 'foreign'. However, it later became associated with the Greek word 'eleos' meaning 'pity' or 'mercy', and even more commonly with 'helios' meaning 'sun' or 'light', leading to the popular interpretation of 'light'.

The name gained significant popularity in medieval Europe through figures like Eleanor of Aquitaine, a powerful queen consort of France and later England.
